Bioregional Governance

This is another posting from friend and colleague George Smiley

This fits well with my understanding of true democracy which includes the "voices" of those who have no hand to raise.

There's a large range of place sizes. A Bioregional place might be small lake in which case governance is also small. The health of the lake is the primary consideration. Governance decisions are made by local stakeholders. If the place is the oceans the place is enormous. The health of the ocean is the major consideration. In this case governance decisions are made on a planetary scale. If the place is a watershed the health of the watershed is the main concern and governance decisions are made by those who are stakeholders in the watershed. If decisions need to be made about how relate to the atmospheric rivers and their tributaries the stakeholders are every living organism on the planet and governance is planetary. All humans are part of the decision making process. The same is true for Climate Change. Humans are not the only ones who have a vote. Trees, for instance, give off a particular scent if they are healthy and a different scent if they’re sick. These scents can be measured for a yes or no vote. If part of a forest is clear cut the remaining trees give off a no scent. If insects are killed by pesticides everything that relies on insects for food are stakeholders. The systems we have make arbitrary decisions based on cash flow or some other unrelated factors. Nationalism must be replaced by Bioregionalism. Power to the Biome!
