Learn to Consult

Consultative abilities, the power of the people to solve problems, begins wsith the individual.

There is one particular cognitive skill you must learn. You MUST learn to let go of ideas. Tom Chi, business consultant, describes it as "moving from attachment to a solution to commitment to solve the problem".

When you express your ideas to the group trying to solve a problem. Let them go! They are no longer your ideas. You have given them to the group. Move beyond the old "fight for what you believe" unless what you believe is the ability of the group to solve the problem. Don't fight for your idea, Don't reiteratge it. For God's sakes, don't make a motion. Roberts Rules of Order was written to guide conflict. We are avoiding conflict to find the best solution to a problem. The goal is to solve the problem by bringing as much information, from as many peopole, to the fore as possible. When you let go of an idea, you make room to create another one, and are able to listen, open mindedly to others.

The second cognitive skill you must develop is the ability to judge ideas rather than people. Remember when someone presents an idea, it is no longer their idea. It belongs to the group to do with as the group wishes. Each individual, and particularly the leader of the group, whose sole function is to keep communication flowing should refrain from labeling an idea with a name. "Peter's idea" is not a good label. Peter gave it to the group. It's not his.
